Lake Traunsee, with a maximum depth of 191 m, is the deepest lake in Austria. The combination of tourism infrastructure (Gmunden, Ebensee, Altmünster), industrial neighbourhood (salt works, magnesite plants, chemicals) and steep shore zones creates a diverse inspection demand. Traunsee water is clear (visibility 5 to 10 m). ROV optics is the primary method even in deep areas, sonar complementary for 3D survey of the steep-shore structures. Deployment at industrial connections in coordination with the respective operator, often as part of recurring inspections.

For method selection in ROV deployments, the lake's depth profile is decisive: near-shore structures such as jetties, landing stages and lido facilities typically lie in the range of 1 to 10 m, while the lake drops off markedly towards the centre.

Mean depth and the exact position of the thermocline vary by source and season. For projects with accuracy requirements we recommend verifying these values in advance against a current hydrographic source — we do not take them as given unchecked when planning a deployment anyway.
